About CarComparison
CarComparison is an independent UK website that helps drivers choose and run a car: how reliable each model really is, what it costs to buy, tax and fuel, and how it compares with its rivals on space, performance and safety.
Why we built it
Most car reliability ratings come from owner surveys or warranty claims, which only cover the cars that some owners chose to report. Every car over three years old in Great Britain has to pass an MOT, and DVSA publishes the result of every test. That makes it the fairest record there is of which cars go wrong, and it was largely going unused. We analysed all 30,771,766 tests of cars aged 3 to 20 from 2024, allowing for each car's age and mileage, and put the results next to the official economy, tax and specification figures you need to make a decision.
What you'll find here
- MOT reliability ratings for every common make and model, and the faults each one fails on most.
- Side-by-side comparisons of price, boot space, safety, running costs and reliability.
- Free calculators for car tax, company car tax, fuel costs and electric car running costs, kept up to date with each Budget.
- A free car check that shows any car's MOT history, mileage readings and advisories from its number plate, using official DVSA records.
- Plain-English guides built on the same data.
Who runs it
CarComparison is run by a small independent team in the UK. We don't sell cars and we're not owned by a dealer, manufacturer or insurer. How we research, check and fund the site is set out in our editorial policy.
