MOT history check
See every MOT result for a car, when the next one is due, the mileage at each test and what each advisory actually means.
Understanding MOT results
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Advisory | Something to keep an eye on. Doesn't fail the test. |
| Minor | A fault with no significant safety effect. Passes, but repair it soon. |
| Major | Affects safety or the environment. Fail: it must be repaired. |
| Dangerous | A direct risk to road safety. Fail, and you shouldn't drive it until repaired. |
Spotting clocked mileage
Each MOT records the odometer reading. If a later test shows fewer miles than an earlier one, the clock may have been wound back or the dashboard replaced. Our check flags this automatically.
Never miss an MOT
Driving without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000 and may invalidate your insurance. Set up a free MOT reminder and we'll email you a month, a week and a day before it's due.

Frequently asked questions
›How far back does MOT history go?
MOT records are held digitally from 2005 in England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland records are available from 2017.
›When is a car's first MOT due?
Three years after the date it was first registered (four years in Northern Ireland). After that, every year.
›Can I MOT my car early?
Yes. You can have the MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.
›What is the difference between an advisory, a minor and a major defect?
Advisories are things to monitor that don't fail the test. Minor defects don't fail the test but should be repaired. Major and dangerous defects are a fail and must be fixed before the car passes.
