ULEZ and clean air zone checker

Will your car be charged in London's ULEZ, or in any of the UK's clean air and low emission zones? Every zone uses the same standard for cars: Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel.

How we work it out

If you know the car's Euro standard, we use it. Otherwise we go by the date it was first registered: the Euro 4 standard became compulsory for new petrol cars in January 2006 and Euro 6 for new diesels in September 2015, though many cars met them earlier. Cars registered in the year or two before those dates may or may not comply, so we flag them for a check.

Last reviewed 29 September 2026. Zone rules from GOV.UK, Transport for London and Transport Scotland.

Frequently asked questions

›Which cars are ULEZ compliant?

Petrol cars that meet Euro 4 (generally registered from January 2006) and diesel cars that meet Euro 6 (generally registered from September 2015). Electric cars are always compliant.

›How much is the ULEZ charge?

£12.50 a day for non-compliant cars, 24/7 across all London boroughs except on Christmas Day.

›Do I pay in Bath, Bradford or Sheffield?

Not in a private car. Those zones only charge taxis, vans, buses, coaches and lorries. Birmingham and Bristol do charge private cars.

›How do Scottish low emission zones work?

Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen don't have a daily charge. Non-compliant vehicles that enter get a penalty charge notice instead.

›Where do I find my car's Euro standard?

Some V5C logbooks show it in section D.2 or in the emissions details. The manufacturer can confirm it, and TfL's online vehicle checker gives a definite answer for London.
