How eVED will work
- Who pays: keepers of electric, hydrogen and plug-in hybrid cars. Vans, buses and lorries are out of scope at the start.
- Rates: 3p a mile for electric and hydrogen cars, 1.5p for plug-in hybrids, rising with inflation from 2029/30.
- Paying: at each car tax renewal you give a mileage reading and estimate the year ahead. You can pay upfront or in instalments, like car tax, and it's reconciled against your actual mileage. MOT readings are used as a check.
- When: you start paying when you first renew your car tax after 1 April 2028.
Is it still cheaper than petrol?
Petrol and diesel cars pay fuel duty on every litre instead, so eVED narrows the gap rather than closing it. Charged at home, an electric car usually stays cheaper to run. Compare the full costs with the electric vs petrol cost calculator.
