Frequently asked questions

›How do you measure reliability?

From DVSA's record of every MOT test in 2024. We count how often each model fails first time and compare it with what we'd expect for cars of the same age and mileage, so an old, high-mileage model isn't marked down just for being old. 100 is average; higher is better.

›Where do the prices, sizes and boot space figures come from?

From each manufacturer's UK specifications and price lists, checked by hand for each generation (a few sizes from Wikipedia where a maker's site was unavailable), with safety ratings from Euro NCAP. Each model page lists its sources. Prices are list prices across the range when we checked them; dealers and online brokers often sell for less. Car photos are from Wikimedia Commons, credited under each picture.

›Where do the MPG and CO2 figures come from?

The Vehicle Certification Agency's official figures for every version sold in the UK. Real-world economy is usually 10 to 20% worse, but the gap is similar across cars, so they're fair for comparing.

›How are running costs worked out?

Fuel uses each car's typical official economy and the UK average pump price (today's UK average). Electric cars use a standard home electricity tariff, allowing 10% for charging losses. Change the mileage to match yours.
